How to know if you’re an SME (Subject Matter Expert):

You believe you could solve world hunger if you turned your attention to it instead of the subject in which you are an expert.

You believe you understand what someone means on your subject better than he or she does.

You think everyone simplifies things too much.

You can find an exception to every rule on your subject.

You can dream up unimaginable situations.

To Dos and Not To Dos: The Unwritten Code

I once called a candidate for a job early in the morning. Well, not that early to most of the world. It was 9:00 a.m., and he was in college and looking for that great entry-level job. The phone rang in his room, and he answered it by saying, “This better be good.” Someone should have told him that when you are looking for a job there are good and bad ways to answer the phone.

There are just some things you do and some things you don’t. These are the rules and commonsense ideas that no one may tell you and are not written down, but if you violate them, you are dinged. The candidate previously mentioned did not get that job.

This is a huge category of information I call “the code of too simple not to know.” Call it folklore, call it common sense, call it courtesy, call it using judgment that will help you succeed; just don’t call it etiquette. These are the pearls of wisdom that may not have a rationale, may not have a basis in quantitative reasoning, but are important.

For some of them I wonder why reminders are necessary. For example, why do I have to remind senior executives to wear clothes that fit? Why do people walk around with toothpicks in their mouths? Why do otherwise normal people use their middle finger as a driving tool?

The code includes addressing any activities that can be seen as acting in poor taste. Firing someone through an E-mail message is in poor taste.

The code changes and morphs all the time as life and technology evolve. New parts of the code are emerging dealing with iPods, text messaging, blogs, and hybrid cars. Since there will never be a written code, it is up to you to always know where the code is moving.

We can all create our own list of what goes on the Not To Do list from our experience. And of course, we can’t forget the To Dos from Mom, like wear clean underwear and keep your hands to yourself. Pay attention to those as the constant; just add the new ones that no one tells you but are important.
